Frequently Asked Questions

For our community members who are deaf or hard of hearing, please view this helpful video resource for information about COVID-19 (coronavirus).

What are the symptoms of COVID-19?

  • Symptoms may include fever, cough and shortness of breath.
  • The CDC believes at this time that symptoms of COVID-19 may appear in as few as two days or as long as 14 days after exposure.
  • Of those who have contracted the virus, the WHO has said most people have experienced milder cases.

How is COVID-19 transmitted?

  • We are still learning about this virus, but we know that it is spread through close contact with an infected person through respiratory droplets.
  • When an infected individual coughs or sneezes, their respiratory droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people nearby, potentially up to a 6-foot distance.

What can I do to protect myself and others?
As always, hand and respiratory hygiene are the best ways to prevent the spread of respiratory viruses. We recommend the following:

Avoid close contact with individuals who have a fever or cough and when out in public, maintain 6 feet of distance away from others

  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth
  • Wash your hands frequently with soap and water or with an alcohol-based hand-sanitizer. When coughing or sneezing, cover your nose and mouth with a flexed elbow or tissue. Wash your hands after.
  • Clean frequently touched objects and surfaces using household cleaning sprays or wipes (phone, keys, TV remote, counters, handles, etc).
  • If you experience any of the symptoms suggestive of COVID-19 (cough, fever, shortness of breath), contact your primary healthcare provider

How do I know if I should be evaluated for COVID-19?

  1. If you have symptoms such as fever, cough, shortness of breath, chills or body aches
  2. If you have traveled to a COVID-19 high-risk area or been exposed to someone who has been diagnosed with or is suspected to have COVID-19

In the above situations, please stay home and contact your health care physician/provider.
If you are experiencing a medical emergency, call 911.

Should I wear a mask to protect myself?

  • The CDC recommends wearing a face mask in public areas
  • Continue to stay at home as much as possible and keep a considerable distance from others if you must be in public
